This term, our senior classes from 4th to 6th had the fantastic opportunity to participate in comprehensive cycling workshops right here at school! Thanks to the expertise and enthusiasm of our amazing instructors, Pat and Conor, our students are now better equipped to hit the roads safely.
What We Learned
The workshop covered all the essentials of cycling safety that are crucial for every young cyclist. Here’s a breakdown of the skills our students mastered:
- Cycle Safety Basics: Understanding the importance of wearing a helmet, checking the bike’s condition, and ensuring all safety gear is in place before setting off.
- Signaling: Our students learned how to signal properly when turning left or right, which is vital for safe communication with other road users.
- Navigating Roundabouts: Pat and Conor did a great job explaining the rules of roundabouts, teaching our students how to enter and exit them safely while being mindful of other vehicles.
- Road Positioning: Knowing where to ride on the road is essential for visibility and safety. The instructors provided practical tips on how to position oneself correctly to avoid hazards.
Hands-On Practice
After the initial instruction, students had the chance to put their new knowledge into practice. They rode through a course set up on the school grounds, complete with mock road signs and roundabouts. The hands-on practice was not only educational but also a lot of fun, as the students navigated the course under the watchful eyes of Pat and Conor.
Grand Finale
For the final workshop, our intrepid cyclists ventured out in groups to Derrynane House and up the Coom road from the village side, applying their newly learned skills in a real-world setting. This trip was not only a test of their cycling abilities but also a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of the route.
