What is the ARC?
Aquaculture is the farming of plants and animals in the water. Although almost all of us have seen and understand farming on the land, not many people are aware that we also farm plants and animals in the water.
The Aquaculture Remote Classroom (ARC) is a mobile classroom which has been designed to raise young people’s awareness of aquaculture. The classroom is supported by online lessons, regular webinars direct to schools and a range of learning resources such as the ARC Poster and the ARC workbook. The ARC is available to schools completely free of charge.
The ARC is literally a truck- sized classroom. The ARC travels all around Ireland, visiting primary schools and fharing all that aquaculture has to offer. The ARC is completely funded through the EU and so is free for primary schools.
Farmed in the EU
Bord Iascaigh Mhara has developed the ARC as part of a European wide campaign called #FarmedintheEU. Although this project has been carried out in 10 other EU countries, Ireland is the only one that has developed a mobile classroom. Farmed in the EU aims to highlight the benefits of aquaculture in supplying sustainable seafood for the growing population, creating employment and helping sustain coastal communities in Ireland and all over the world.
